We're Dave, Deb and Kyle Nitz, and we've owned Liquor Lovers since 2023. We're not a chain, and we're not trying to be one. We're old-school, small-town Midwestern people, and we want walking in here to feel like walking into a hometown shop from 20 years ago that just happens to sell juice in a can or a bottle.
How We Got Here
Deb and I have been Iowa people a long time. We moved to West Des Moines more than 35 years ago for my first big-boy job, in the investment department at Principal. About 15 years later we decided it was time to build something of our own, and we've been business owners ever since.
About seven years ago it was time to retire, so we moved to Phoenix. I lasted about as long as you'd guess. I got bored, talked our son Kyle into moving out too, and the two of us bought a beer and wine shop. It turned into a lot more than a business. Our family got deeply involved with the homeless and teenage runaways in our community, and I still call that the best thing I've done in my career.
Then I had a health scare, and we came home to Iowa and landed in Waukee. Once I had my health pulled together, I was ready to get back in the game. The three of us went looking for a liquor store, and Liquor Lovers landed in our lap.
Make Some, Give Some
When we bought the store, we made a promise. If our customers kept the shelves turning, we'd share some of what we made with the community around us.
We call it Make Some, Give Some.
So far that's meant supporting Blue Star Mothers, tying one of our Store Picks to Variety Club of Iowa, and joining On With Life's fundraiser in September 2026, where customers bought bottles and donated them to support their work.
Every one of you who shops here is part of that. We hope you're as proud of it as we are.

Single barrels we tasted and picked ourselves.
Raffles
The Big Raffle runs twice a year, and anybody can get in. The Saturday Raffle is our thank-you to loyalty customers.

Yes. Pull around to the north side of the building.
Veterans
5% off every day. Show a valid veteran ID.
Shipping
We can't ship. Pick up in the store or at the drive-thru, 21 and over.
